Parsley and the pitmaster

Here is a pic of the very first herbs that we started from seed back in early February. As you can see, they include parsley and basil. Today my focus is on parsley and I will explain why.....My husband, better known as Bent for blogging purposes, recently delved into the world of pitmaster barbecuing. You see, we always eat barbecue....like seriously at least 300 days a year. I'm not sure what the inside of my oven even looks like anymore....Well, Bent's love of barbecue prompted him to sign up for a few friendly barbecue competitions which in turn prompted several of his friends and family members to jump on the bandwagon. As a result, their group is signed up for several summer competitions. (I will post about them later)

I know you must be wondering...how does parsley fit into all of this? Well, parsley happens to be one of the only garnishes allowed for presentation purposes in many barbecue competitions. So guess who has to grow enough parsley to make it through the grilling season? If you have grown parsley, you know it takes a long time to mature so I started early in hopes that I will not run out before the season is over.

The pic above is what our yard typically looks like on any given day...it's smokey but hey it always smells great... And yes...as you can see...Bent wasn't satisfied with just one grill....he needs many and he hopes to win yet another one at an upcoming competition. With so many charcoal grills going at once we of course had to have a stoker in order to control several grill temps at one time...(basically the stoker is a computer controlled device that will turn on blowers to increase the charcoal temps)

I give Bent a bad time about his barbecue obsession but it's all in fun.....I mean what more could I ask for?? I get dinner cooked for me nearly every night : )
But for heaven's sake where do I draw the line? Eggs on the grill??? Even the pups look on in disbelief : )

  5. I was testing a theory posed by a couple pitmasters on another blog... I was done cooking and coals were still hot, so I gave it a shot... It worked!

  6. Yep...smoked eggs...you suppose we could throw the Easter eggs on the grill too...then the house won't smell so bad... : )

  8. Eggs on the grill is just plain weird! Hehe...There's nothing like a good barbecue, though.

  9. I think Rub Em' Raw wives are conflicted between good food and obsessed smelly husbands. As long as we keep em conflicted I think we can get away with it.

  10. Oh Granny don't be hating now : ) We eat so much barbecue that my kids actually complain when we tell them we are having it for dinner again...when their friends come over though they are delighted to eat it. Peace AG : )

  12. Rob: I am definitely conflicted : ) ...and I'm actually considering making a men's cologne called pitmaster's sexy smoke...it could come in apple, cherry, alder, oak etc.....Ha!

  13. Aw, Sunny, you know I'm not hating on ya! It's just that I love barbecue, and I'm probably going to have to buy a parsley plant from the nursery. Life just isn't fair sometimes. :-D

  15. First, a very belated welcome to Blotanical! And thanks so much for visiting my own blog. I hope to get to know you better and look forward to reading your future posts.

Now, about that barbeque. What is it about men and barbeque? My husband is not as serious about it as yours, but he rules the grill in our house. Like you, I don't mind much, because I don't have to cook when he grills and he's happy because he gets to play with fire.

  16. Thanks Deb! I enjoyed reading your blog as well. I don't know about men and bbq but I don't mind it either...it gives me more time to garden : )

  17. Oh, yum! There's just so much primal deliciousness in barbecuing. I could eat it everyday if I had to. By the looks of things, your husband is well on his way to being a master. Any chance he'll share any of his recipes?

  18. The bbq looks really good! I have a gas & charcoal kettle. I like charcoal the best but I am to lazy to use it all the time.

  19. Thomas: I do believe he will offer up a few good bbq tips : )

Dan: The charcoal is more work but definitely worth it..he also cooks with many different woods like cherry, mesquite, apple etc...each has their own unique flavors.
